Needham Metrowest 2020/2021 Season - UPDATE 8/24/20

We hope that everyone is doing well, staying healthy and safe, and enjoying their summer with the current circumstances. We have received a few inquiries recently and wanted to proactively share an update with all of you regarding the upcoming Metrowest season.

We typically announce and advertise our upcoming Metrowest tryout dates and open online registrations around this time of the year.  However, due to the current circumstances surrounding the current COVID-19 situation, we are in a holding pattern and nothing is planned for the upcoming months.

There are two main reasons that have led us to this decision.  Currently the state guidelines provided by the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs divides sports and recreational activities into 3 categories, Low Risk, Moderate Risk, and High Risk.  Basketball is currently classified as a “High Risk” sport which allows it to have “individually or socially distanced group activities (non-contact workouts, aerobic conditioning, individual skill work and drills)”.  In order to be able to play basketball as “traditionally played”, modifications would need to be made to “eliminate deliberate contact and intermittent contact”.  Please find the entire guideline updated August 13th in the following link. (see https://www.mass.gov/doc/safety-standards-for-youth-and-adult-amateur-sports-activities-phase-iii-step-1/download#:~:text=Participants%20for%20all%20sports%20must,other%20persons%20at%20all%20times.)

The other reason has to deal with the uncertainty and/or unavailability of school gyms for our tryouts, practices and games.  The town of Needham has already reached out to us, along with our similar programs who rent space from the town, alerting us that Needham schools will not be issuing any permits to outside groups through January 1st.  We have also heard from a few of the private gyms we typically use and they are following a similar approach.

Our hope is to have basketball at some point this 2020/21 season but please realize that there are some significant challenges for the first half of the season. We are hopeful that things will continue to improve and we might be able to provide some semblance of a Metrowest season, but we want to be transparent with the various challenges we are faced with in the coming year.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide any updates as necessary.

About Needham Metrowest Basketball

The Needham Metrowest Basketball Travel program is a competitive program for boys and girls, grades 4th thru 8th. The winter program competes in the Metrowest Basketball League which includes over 80 towns and 1,000 teams.  Individual and team development in the sport are the major goals of the league in addition to developing our young players in a respectful and supportive team environment.  The program typically offers a higher and lower division team in each age group.  Additional teams are added as practice gym space and other factors permit.  Players who live in Needham or attend Needham schools through the METCO program are eligible.  Players must play in the grade level that they attend that school year.

Many questions about the program can be answered by viewing the FAQ section.  If you have other questions please email us at needhammetrowest@gmail.com.

Tryouts are posted under the Home tab and will be announced in the Needham Times and will be been communicated via an email to all parents of children who tried out the prior year.  Please note you must register before the tryout – no exceptions.
