We wanted to provide everyone with an update on Metrowest basketball.
We are sure many of you are aware, but for those of you who aren't, the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs in the state of Massachusetts released revised guidance for Youth and Amateur Sports this past Friday, November 6th. While the revised guidance touches on many items, specific to this email and this crowd, it clears the way for basketball to be played this winter in this state.
We are unclear of the modifications that may be required to play the sport as that is still being decided and discussed but our plan, at this point, is to move forward with a Metrowest season.
It is expected that our season will look very different this year than in years past as outlined in the survey we sent out previously. The league season will start in January and run for 8 weeks with the playoffs starting in early March. We do not expect to have access to any local gyms for practice or games and will plan on playing all away or neutral site games (if this changes, we will certainly let everyone know).
We anticipate that the fee to play this year will be less than in years past due to the reduction in gym space, but we don't have a clear view yet of what that savings will be. As soon as we get more guidance on that from the league and see how they plan to handle referee fees and gym rentals for neutral site games as well as any other items that may arise, we will let you know.
We received a lot of comments from parents, in response to the survey and assuming there was going to be a season, regarding the make-up of the teams. We understand this is a very sensitive subject for many families, not only those that attended tryouts last year as well as for families that are new to Needham and have heard about our program.
We met as a board last night and made the decision to move forward and host tryouts for all grades next weekend, November 21st and 22nd. Our tryouts this year will be held at Mass Premier Courts in Foxborough.
We are still working through some of the logistical challenges and exact schedule but for planning purposes the tryouts will be as follows:
In years past, we have held tryouts over multiple weekends to help with potential conflicts and made it mandatory that you attend at least one of the tryouts. This year, due to the tight frame we are dealing with, limitations with gym space, as well as other limiting factors, we will only be able to hold one tryout for each gender. We are hopeful that most fall sports will be concluded by the weekend of the 21st and 22nd and most conflicts will be eliminated.
While tryouts will not be mandatory this year, we strongly encourage your son or daughter to attend the tryouts as it is their best opportunity to make a team and then be placed on the correct team.
We plan to open the online registration for tryouts later this week and will let you know when we do so. We will be waiving the tryout registration fee this year.
We ask for your patience and understanding as we work through this together. We apologize for the short notice but we are reacting as quickly as possible to the changes in state guidelines. We will continue to work as hard as we can to ensure we have a safe, enjoyable and basketball season.

The Needham Metrowest Basketball Travel program is a competitive program for boys and girls, grades 4th thru 8th. The winter program competes in the Metrowest Basketball League which includes over 80 towns and 1,000 teams. Individual and team development in the sport are the major goals of the league in addition to developing our young players in a respectful and supportive team environment. The program typically offers a higher and lower division team in each age group. Additional teams are added as practice gym space and other factors permit. Players who live in Needham or attend Needham schools through the METCO program are eligible. Players must play in the grade level that they attend that school year.
Many questions about the program can be answered by viewing the FAQ section. If you have other questions please email us at email@example.com.
Tryouts are posted under the Home tab and will be announced in the Needham Times and will be been communicated via an email to all parents of children who tried out the prior year. Please note you must register before the tryout – no exceptions.
